We asked Jack Hornsey and team from Next Level Business to tell us about being an Accounting Excellence 2019 finalist for Small Firm of the Year.

What does it mean to you to be one of the Accounting Excellence Top 5 firms in the Small Firm of the Year category this year?

For us, it means that our validation that perhaps accountants can help change the world is just a little bit true. True in the sense we help our clients be successful in their mission to change the world and that through our fantastic testimonials and relationships we can feel we play an important part in helping them on that journey.

We are only three years old but it is also proof that if you nurture the seeds of growth and work within your passion good things can happen. Recognition gives the (ever increasing) team fuel to continue our mission.

What achievement in the last year are you most proud of?

Being part of changing the world through clients. For example:

The World of Sight: By helping our client Peek Vision secure one of the largest funding deals in the non-profit sector in Europe last year they were able to carry on with their mission to eliminate preventable blindness in developing countries. As a result they delivered a program impacting every child in Botswana so that no child in that country from this generation onward would grow up with preventable blindness.

The World of Tremor: Hand tremor such as that caused by Parkinson’s impacts the lives of over 100m people worldwide. By helping our client Gyrogear secure a multi million grant and funding round they have been able to complete their medical device concept which prevents 80% of the symptoms of tremor and could change the lives of over 50m people worldwide.

What are you going to be focusing on in the next 12 months?

We will be focussing on ourselves primarily. This may sound a tiny bit selfish but we believe that if we are the best we can be then our clients will benefit and be able to be the best they can be as a result. In that context we are a small and unfinished firm but with a real dedication to ‘kaizen’ improvement of everything we do. If we had to pick our top 3 areas it would be to work on our people, processes and bespoke advisory services.

What would be your top tip/tips for firms aspiring to achieve excellence in the profession?

  1. Focus on being the best (at your chosen area)
  2. Do it right from the start
  3. Systemise everything
  4. Pay close attention to detail
  5. Invest in people and technology
  6. Find your passion, ignore everything else
