We speak to our 2020 hat-trick winners FreeAgent, and CEO Ed Molyneux explains how they will build on this achievement moving forward.

How does it feel to win Best Small Business Accounting Software of the Year?

Amazing! We’ve always strived to make FreeAgent the best solution for the UK’s smallest businesses and their accountants, and it’s really important to us that it’s our customers themselves who have voted us the winner.

How does it feel to win Best Data & Expense Management Software of the Year?

Winning Best Data & Expense Management Software for our mobile app is really pleasing. We’ve invested a lot of time and resources over the past year into strengthening this area of our business, so it’s fantastic to be recognised for the positive impact this is having on our customers.

Small business owners and accountants have really been engaging with FreeAgent mobile in 2020 and are increasingly viewing it as an integral part of their day-to-day client bookkeeping and financial management. That’s something we’re really looking forward to building on in the future.

How does it feel to win Best Small Business Accounting Software, Practitioners’ Choice of the Year?

We’re really delighted to win this, as it’s an award that comes directly from the opinions of accountants themselves. The fact that so many have chosen FreeAgent as the software they feel works best for them and their clients is a real testament to the hard work we’ve put in over the past 12 months and the strong relationships we’ve built with accountants and bookkeepers.

How will winning the 2020 Accounting Excellence Award for Best Small Business Accounting Software impact your firm after a difficult year like this one?

It’s great to be recognised for all the hard work our whole team has put into continuing to improve and develop our software and service. During such a demanding year, we’re proud to have been able to support our accounting and bookkeeper partners and small business users and look forward to working with them in 2021.

How will winning the 2020 Accounting Excellence Award for Best Data & Expense Management Software impact your firm after a difficult year like this one?

While Covid-19 lockdowns have had a significant, restrictive impact on the small business sector this year we still see mobile working being the accepted norm for these businesses in the future.

Mobile has already become a vital component of the FreeAgent experience and we’re absolutely committed to ensuring it continues to meet the very specific needs of accountants and smaller business clients. Winning the Best Data and Management Software award will help inspire us to achieve even greater things in this area in 2021.

How will winning the 2020 Accounting Excellence Award for Best Small Business Accounting Software, Practitioners’ Choice impact your firm after a difficult year like this one?

We know FreeAgent is loved by small business owners, but it’s fantastic that we’re also being recognised by their accountants too. We’ve put a lot of thought and time into evolving our software this year, and it’s a testament to our accountant partners that they clearly value end-user satisfaction so highly when it comes to small business accounting software.

It’s been a particularly tough year for everyone, but winning the Best Small Business Accounting Software, Practitioners’ Choice award is a great reward for the work we’ve been doing. It shows that we’re firmly on the right track and gives us a really strong foundation for the next 12 months.

What advice would you give to anyone entering the awards, or thinking of entering the awards next year?

Do it! The awards are a great opportunity to not only showcase the great things that you’ve been doing over the last year, but also to see just what your customers and clients think. They really are the gold standard when it comes to accounting excellence.

What does accounting excellence mean to you?

Going above and beyond the accepted ‘normal’ and providing real value for your clients and customers.

For software providers, this means creating new products that don’t just satisfy accountants and the clients they work with – but delight them and change the way they work. It’s about finding solutions that don’t just address specific pain points, but which actually improve people’s lives. And it’s about continually pushing yourself to deliver bigger and better things, rather than resting on your laurels.
