We interviewed Gary Zouvani from DNS Accountants about being named a top 5 finalist for the Investing in People Award:
What does it mean to you to be one of the Accounting Excellence Top 5 firms in the Investing in People category this year?
Everyone at DNS is immensely proud to be among the Accounting Excellence Top 5 firms in the Investing in People category 2019. Our achievements, including the awards and accreditations we’ve won over recent years, motivate us to do better. With a conviction that technology and automation alone cannot deliver excellence, DNS is confident that, by investing in people, through development and training of our team and assurances to staff that they can progress through the firm, we can reach our goal of making DNS the go-to accountancy practice for contractors and small businesses nationwide.
What achievement in the last year are you most proud of?
DNS’s investing in people strategy – a comprehensive employee engagement programme to improve staff satisfaction, retention and efficiency – is proving successful. With focus on training, mentoring, peer support and upskilling, with the infrastructure in place to plan, motivate and monitor staff progression, the strategy is already attracting positive feedback and improving how we deliver services to our clients. To back up this strategy, our Staff Progression Chart maps clearly the route all staff can take through the business right to the top, injecting a healthy competitive spirit and optimism into the business.
What are you going to be focusing on in the next 12 months?
Recently introduced, the WOW! Awards is part of our investing in people strategy. This independent employee recognition programme presents an opportunity for all employees to gain recognition for the work they do, with nominations judged independently by WOW! Allowing both colleagues and clients to recommend people for outstanding work, every employee, regardless of seniority, has the chance of being recognised for their efforts. A WOW! Awards page on the DNS website will publish nominations, with Award presentations taking place in-house at DNS’s monthly team meetings. The most outstanding among these may be invited to attend the WOW! Awards annual gala ceremony.
What would be your top tip/tips for firms aspiring to achieve excellence in the profession?
- Take an educative stance so that clients (and employees) know immediately what is expected of them.
- Provide staff time to complete training: specifically DNS allows a 1.5 hour time slot in every employee’s calendar each Friday morning dedicated to training.
- Ensure a robust system to plan, monitor and appraise training.
- Provide opportunities for career progression and nurture an environment where excellence is rewarded.
